Why thrift shopping for our kids is here to stay..

Updated: Jul 18

I thought this was a fitting topic for my first blog. Why? Because if you would have told me 2 years ago when I had just found out I was expecting my son Jude that I would be dressing him in head to toe preloved vintage clothes I deffo wouldn't have believed you. And that’s not because I didn't like the idea, it's because I had no idea what you could get when you dig deep in the weeds and start looking out there, nor, how amazing the quality of kids' vintage was and how cute and seriously cool the pieces are.

Don't get me wrong, when I was pregnant I loved shopping for the basics, baby-grows, vests, pjs etc from your trusty faves like Marks and Spencers, The White Company, John Lewis and that. I loved that buzz of filling his little chest of drawers and everything being crisp white, teeny cute and baby soft. But what I found was, as he grew older and was on the move, the high street clothes just didn't seem to cut the mustard. They were either too expensive, not in the right style I wanted, not versatile, didn’t last many wears before looking ragged, or, everyone else’s kid was wearing the same items (which put me right off!).

So I found myself trawling charity shops on maternity leave looking for cool vibrant pieces from the 90’s that reeked nostalgia. I was scrolling through Ebay and vinted for one-off cute vintage pieces and rummaging through European markets when I went away.  My eyes opened, WOW!

There is so much cool stuff out there for kids, you just need to have a good eye for it and put the time into looking. And the best bit was - I bloody loved it! There was no better feeling than finding a fab pair of vintage Osh Kosh dungarees, or an original Disney piece from America or finding an outfit that I used to have as a kid meself. It was a fun challenge for me and it was even more enjoyable when people asked me where I found these gorgeous pieces or how they took them back to the good ol' days. There was history in these threads. They felt special.

There are so many benefits to buying preloved vintage, from style, uniqueness to durability and saving this hot planet. It’s a no-brainer when you work out the cost per wear (remember most vintage if not handed down, goes on to sell for the buying price- or most likely more!) and the quality is amazing, these little gems have stood the test of countless years of play and they ain’t gonna give up on us now. I’m so here for this.

In a world where we are all striving to do our best for this gorgeous planet, cut down on waste and make our pennies stretch that little bit further all whilst looking effortlessly cool, it’s a movement that’s here to stay for generations I think.
